The California Bureau of Cannabis Control has set forth required sampling guidelines.  As such, all compliance samples must be collected by laboratory personnel; the cannabis business is required to video tape the sampling by the lab and it must fill out forms (SARF/Chain of Custody).  Sampling should be done using cGMPs for personnel hygiene and PPE (i.e. gloves, sterile sample collection gear, SARF/Chain of Custody Form, etc.) and by following DLI-QM-SOP-505 Sampling of Cannabis and Cannabis Products.

*The lab requires a minimum of 17 grams of sample to run all of the assays for a phase III compliance package. For Vape Cartridges and certain other concentrates, the lab requests 19g due to the issues in extracting all of the oil out of the cartridge.

FLOWER (Harvest Batch)

Sample size is dependent upon both Laboratory need and total Harvest Batch weight.  The Title 16 Regulation for Phase III testing, requires 0.35% of the total Harvest Batch be sampled for testing.

CANNABIS PRODUCT SAMPLING

This sampling scheme is for all pre-packaged Cannabis Products, including but not limited to Edibles, Infused butter/oil, Oils/Wax/Hash, and E-Cartridges.  Sample size is dependent upon both laboratory need and the number of units in the production batch.  The chart indicates the number of increments (pre-packaged product units) to be pulled based on the total individually packaged units from the batch; pre-packaged 1mL units of Tincture from a 1500-unit batch would require a minimum of thirteen (13) units be submitted to the lab; 17 units need to be collected to ensure enough sample is collected for all of the required compliance testing. Inhalable Concentrates, like vape cartridges, may require the collection of a 19-gram sample.

-   Additional increments may need to be pulled to provide lab with minimum 17 g sample for Phase III compliance testing.

In order to guarantee that the sample arrives at the lab in the best possible condition, the Field Technician will ensure all sample containers are marked with the sample description (ID and Batch #) using a sharpie, sealed with tamper-evident tape, placed in an odor proof bag, then placed in a lockable carrying case.  It is imperative that the SARF / Chain of Custody form is filled out completely to ensure there are no delays in the testing. The SARF/Chain of Custody can’t be changed in any way after the sampling event is complete.

It is our goal to achieve a three-day turn-around time for all testing, R&D and Compliance, as long as samples arrive at the lab prior to 3pm.  All samples that arrive at the lab after 3pm will have the three-day turn-around time start the next business day.  Additionally, if there are any instrument issues, this may impact the three-day turn-around time goal.
